How to choose a coffee machine: bean to cup, espresso or capsule

A coffee machine earns its place on the worktop if it suits how you actually drink coffee. Here is what each type does and what to check before you choose.

The main types

  • Bean to cup: grinds whole beans and brews the coffee for you, usually at the touch of a button. Many models include a milk system for drinks such as lattes and cappuccinos.
  • Espresso machine: makes espresso, and you typically add milk yourself. Check the product page to see how each model handles milk and whether it grinds beans itself.
  • Capsule machine: uses pre-filled capsules, which keeps things quick and tidy. Check which capsule system the machine uses before you buy.
  • Filter and capsule combination: some machines, such as the Ninja Prestige DualBrew, can make filter coffee as well as use capsules.

What to check before you buy

  • The drinks you make. If you mostly drink milky coffee, look at how the milk is frothed and how easy it is to clean.
  • Cleaning and descaling. Every machine needs regular care. Look at what the manufacturer recommends and how much of it is automatic.
  • Water tank size. A larger tank means fewer refills.
  • Space. Measure the height and depth under your cupboards, including room to fill the tank and bean hopper.
  • Ongoing costs. Think about whether you will buy whole beans, ground coffee or capsules.
