Heat pump tumble dryers explained: how they work and what to check

Heat pump tumble dryers are a popular choice because of how they use heat. This guide explains how they differ from vented and condenser dryers and what to check before you buy.

How a heat pump dryer works

A heat pump dryer uses a closed-loop system that captures and reuses hot air instead of venting it out, according to HomeServe.

How the three types compare

  • Vented: blows damp air out through a vent or hose, so it needs an external vent. HomeServe describes vented dryers as the quickest, with the highest running costs.
  • Condenser: cools the damp air so the moisture condenses into water, which is collected in a tank or drained away. It does not need an external vent. HomeServe puts running costs and drying time between the other two types.
  • Heat pump: does not need an external vent either. HomeServe describes heat pump dryers as the most energy efficient, with the lowest running costs, but also the slowest, using the lowest drying temperatures.

What to check before you buy

  • Capacity. Dryers are sold by drum capacity in kg, such as 9kg or 10kg. Pick one that suits the size of your usual load.
  • Size and door. Check the height, width and depth, and which way the door opens, against the space you have.
  • Water collection. Check the specification to see how each model deals with the water it removes, for example a container to empty or a drain connection.
  • Programmes. Look at the cycles on offer, such as cotton, delicates or a quicker cycle.
  • Care. Manufacturers generally ask you to clean the filter regularly. Check the manual for the model you choose.
  • Stacking. If you plan to stack the dryer on a washing machine, check the manufacturer's guidance for that combination of models.
